But we had also both taken that day off of work, so now we had to do it again. I was lucky that I wasn't driving by myself, otherwise I would have never gotten that text because I wouldn't be looking at my phone while driving in such horrible weather. We got more than half way there just to get a text saying they had to cancel their appts. We left the next morning around 6:30am because the roads were so bad. Two weeks ago we had this appt made and the day before we got a reminder and whoever I talked to said "I noticed you guys are coming from Fremont, drive safe!" So they knew we had a far drive. The ONLY reason I took a star away is because it is not easy for my boyfriend and I to get days off of work. Please take into consideration that these notifications should be sent out earlier or the night before for the people who have a far drive. I will not check my phone while I am driving, especially when it's icy and I have my dog in the car, that is dangerous. And that it was a text message, not a call. And I know we aren't the only ones that don't have such a flexible schedule. I was mostly irritated because I know we aren't the only ones who had a far drive.
Yet everyone can agree that preventive measures are essential to progressive animal welfare/control programs. Nationwide, less than 5% of their budgets is spent on measures to prevent unwanted litters. Most animal control/welfare agencies spend the bulk of their budgets on capturing, accepting, sheltering, feeding, inoculating and adopting their animals and in euthanizing and disposing of the bodies of those unclaimed or unplaced. Still, these two shelters are forced to kill many thousands of healthy dogs and cats each year because there are simply too many for the community to absorb.

They applauded the fact that Kent County has long encouraged sterilization by offering reduced license fees for sterilized dogs and that both the Kent County Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of Kent County required the sterilization of adopted shelter animals long before it became state law.
